DJ Matt Werner is a spoken word DJ from the San Francisco Bay Area. An Oakland native, Matt has DJed such venues as the Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts for Youth Speaks' annual Bringing the Noise for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his mixes have been played on KPFA, WGBT, and Fresh Air: The Alternative. Matt won the 2008 and 2009 Fresh Air Awards for "Best Exchange Student DJ."
Since 2004, Matt has DJed numerous literary events at UC Berkeley and around the San Francisco Bay Area, ranging from the Poetry After the Storm reading series for New Orleans libraries, to Berkeley Poetry Review events. His show on Fresh Air: The Alternative, broadcast from Edinburgh, Scotland features interviews with provocative artists like Saul Williams, Talib Kweli, MC Lars, Kid Beyond, George Watsky, and Dahlak Brathwaite.
Matt hopes to raise the level of public discourse by recontextualizing eloquent voices of the present and past in a format readily accessible to the web 2.0/hip hop generation.
